Your gateway to Italy
"Monteleone di Orvieto is a charming medieval hamlet stretched out along a ridge above the RipignoloRiver. The old town was established in 900 A.D. as a garrison during the papal wars (which is why it is enclosed in high stone walls). It was the last protection for Orvieto.
We were treated to a tour of a wonderful Tuscan-style home comprised of three levels (piano terra, primo piano, secondo piano). The taverna on the piano terra, is a place for entertaining family and friends. It also included a cave beneath the piano terra, a great place for storing all that FABULOUS Italian wine!
We strolled around the old town passing residents who offered a smile and a “buongiorno” every time. A short walk to the belvedere at the edge of town offered magnificent 180-degree views of surrounding rolling hillsides and valleys. Leaving through the porta (archway) of the old village, we walked just several blocks to enjoy a scrumptious panini as we sat on a quiet terrace next to a park.
Monteleone di Orvieto is a peaceful town most of the time but boasts a historic costume parade in August. At Christmas the village is transformed into a replica Bethlehem renowned throughout Italy. It also boasts of a lovely old 98-seat theater where a local theater group performs. Couples come from far and wide to be married in the town's little theater!"
